If you have completed any web design (or similar) classes, you MUST enter the Advanced category.

Middle School Competitors
  Middle school competitors MUST at a minimum meet the Beginner requirements. However, middle school competitors may also add an audio, video, or animation feature. See Advanced Category for rules.

Announcing the winners: Twelve (12) finalists will be chosen in each category.  All thirty-six (36) finalists, their families and their teachers will be invited to the Virtual Finals Day ceremony on February 26, 2022. Finalist will be notified of making the finals on February 16, 2022.

ADVANCED finalists will present their sites virtually to the Finals Day judges. ADVANCED winners are determined by combining finalist's first round score with their Finals Day score.

THE FIVE PAGES: One page must be your home (index) page, which introduces the topic. Three pages must be dedicated to your discussion of this topic. The 5th page must list:

  1. The computer classes you are taking or have taken;

  2. HTML code you used from other websites, the page of your website the code is on, and a description of how you altered it, if you did. See FAQ and the Resources page for more information.

  3. any other software used, including image-editing software; and

  4. any other applicable sources

You may use design software IF you choose "blank page" to begin the project. The use of templates created by others is NOT allowed.
Usability Rules
Your site must include: a) adequate text-to-background contrast; b) easy-to-read font size; c) easily identifiable navigation with clear and concise labels; d) consistent styles and colors; e) text without spelling and grammar errors.
Both alt tags and title tags are required on images. See our FAQ and Resources pages for more information.
Primary navigation options must be prominent and intuitive (easy to identify). The links must work.
Technical Rules
Home page must be named ”index” in its url. (Example: index.html)
Your site must utilize current versions of web development languages. (See w3.org standards for the current version.)
At least one external link is required and it must:
a. clearly be a link, as evidenced by its appearance or by a mouse hover;
b. open in a new window; and
c. support or enhance the content of your site.

This link may be a social media link, as long as it is non-personal. See our FAQs page for more information.
A second external link is required, and it must follow the same requirements as the first one. If the first external link is not the above-described social media link, this one must be. See our FAQs page for more information.
Any and all images that are visible on your site must be saved in your images folder and linked from there. Specifically, if any image that is visible on your site appears merely because you've linked to it on another site, your site will be disqualified from the competition.
For the protection of your privacy, the following links are prohibited:
a. links to personal websites;
b. links to personal social media pages; and
c. "email me" links
Your site must function & load quickly in all major browsers.
The use of animation software is not allowed.
Design Rules
Individual page names must be descriptive.
Images must load correctly. Original images will be scored higher than non-original images. See our FAQ and Resources pages for more information about possible copyrights on non-original images.
The page design must be consistent on all five pages. CSS is preferred for layout, but not required. See our FAQ and Resources pages for more information on CSS.
The filenames that precede '.html' may not contain special characters, spaces, or capital letters. The filenames must be similar or identical to both the title on the page as well as the navigation button labels.
No audio, video, auto-scrolling, or animation is allowed, except for mouse-over movement, for competitors in the high School Beginner category. Mouse-over movement is allowed but not required. Slide shows that are controlled by the viewer are allowed but not required. Middle School competitors have the option to add audio, video, auto-scrolling, and animation.
One instance of up to 15 seconds of ORIGINAL audio, video, auto-scrolling, or animation is mandatory for the high school Advanced category. It must relate to the topic. Mouse-over animation and/or scrolling navigation is allowed, but does not count toward the mandatory audio/video/sound/animation requirement.
Bonus Points
Bonus points will be given for well indented code, proper use of HTML tags, and use of external style sheets. The external style-sheets must reside inside of your website folder.
